Significance

Spring-festival. Krishna playing rasa with gopis. Holika Dahan (eve) commemorates Prahlada's rescue from his demoness-aunt Holika. The next day = the supreme colour-festival.

Why this date — the science

Astronomically, spring equinox — the day length finally equals night length. The earth enters its rebirth-phase. Traditional Holi colours were made from PALASHA + HALDI + KUMKUM + indigo — all natural plant-pigments with mild antiseptic + skin-cleansing properties.

Ayurvedic wisdom

Spring (kapha-aggravating season). Holi colours, originally medicinal: turmeric (anti-bacterial, anti-fungal), neem-leaves (skin-cleansing), palasha (kapha-balancing). Bonfire (Holika Dahan) eve + dancing all day = exactly the spring-detox the body needs. The bhang (cannabis-paste) drink — used sparingly — is a Holi-specific Ayurveda formulation.

Caste + age + status DISSOLVE under coloured powder. The boss + the servant get the same gulal-treatment. Old grievances are forgotten in the chaos. Couples reconcile. Communities heal.
