Significance

The "Great Night of Shiva". Shiva's tandava-dance + cosmic-marriage to Parvati. The supreme night for Shiva-bhaktas. All-night jagaran with abhisheka of Shiva-lingas + Bilva-patra offerings.

Why this date — the science

Astronomically, this falls on the 14th lunar day of the dark fortnight in Phalguna — when the moon is nearly invisible. The geo-position of earth-moon-sun creates a SPECIFIC gravitational + electromagnetic configuration. Tradition says spiritual energies are heightened on this night because the moon (which governs the mind) is absent — so the mind has minimum interference.

Ayurvedic wisdom

Fasting (only fruits + milk) during Shivaratri = an annual one-day detox + agni-rest. Combined with all-night vigil, the body experiences mild ketosis + mind sharpens. Bilva-patra contains rare flavonoids that have been shown to help diabetes-management — its ritual use also has biological side-benefits.

For the family & mind

The all-night vigil is the ANNUAL "I can stay awake all night with chanting" challenge. Builds discipline. The mass-jagaran (group-night-vigil) at temples creates intense community-bonding. Many marriages + family-reunions happen post-Shivaratri.
