Significance

The supreme Devi-festival. 9 nights → 1 day Dussehra. Sharada-navaratri = the autumn festival. (There are 4 navaratris per year — Chaitra, Ashada-gupta, Ashwina, Magha-gupta — but Ashwina is the supreme.) Each night a different Navadurga.

Why this date — the science

Astronomically, Sharada-ritu = season-change from monsoon to autumn. Equinox is just past. The 9 nights = the period when nights are CLEAREST + LONGEST in the autumn sky. Ideal for night-jagaran + star-observation.

Ayurvedic wisdom

Season-change = the body's most-vulnerable annual moment (per Ayurveda). The 9-day fast (some traditions only fruits + milk; others rotate one grain per day) = a STRUCTURED 9-day post-monsoon detox. The body sheds accumulated kapha + prepares for winter. Many Ayurveda-doctors do their own Panchakarma during Navaratri.

For the family & mind

For women: empowerment. The Devi is HONORED as the supreme. Garba + Dandiya (Gujarat) — group-dance for 9 nights creates massive social-bonding + courtship-opportunities for the year. For families: 9 evenings together. Dussehra (the 10th day) = victory of dharma over adharma → Ravana-effigy burning = cathartic release of all accumulated negativity from the year.
