Married women tie threads around a banyan tree + pray for their husband's long life. The Savitri-Satyavan story - the wife who argued Yama into restoring her husband's life.
Why this date - the science
Banyan (Ficus benghalensis) is among the longest-lived trees in India - a single tree walks outward on its prop-roots until it looks like a grove, and old specimens stand for centuries. A vrata about continuity and long life is therefore kept under the one tree in the landscape that most visibly outlasts the people sitting beneath it. Its bark and latex do have a long entry in the classical materia medica, but what those texts prescribe them for is a matter for a vaidya and is not repeated here. Collective circumambulation by married women is a community and social-bonding ritual. (Note: the popular claim that banyans release oxygen at night is a misconception - all non-CAM plants consume oxygen at night.)
Ayurvedic wisdom
Ayurveda classes the banyan among the kashaya (astringent) dravyas, and nothing is claimed for it on this page - a dravya's indications belong with a vaidya who has seen the person. What the observance itself asks is plainer: a day on fruit and milk at the hottest point of the year, and a slow morning walked around a shaded tree in company rather than spent indoors alone.
For the family & mind
For married women - affirmation of partnership + a structured annual day of prayer for the husband's welfare. The Savitri-Yama story is the supreme women-empowerment tale of dharmic argumentation defeating death.
