What this Kundli tool gives you
Vedic astrology (Jyotisha) and the kundli
Jyotisha - the “eye of the Vedas” - is one of the six Vedangas and one of the oldest living astronomical and divinatory traditions in the world. Unlike Western astrology, which uses the tropical zodiac (fixed to the seasons), Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac (fixed to the actual star positions), corrected by an ayanamsa value. The most widely accepted ayanamsa in India is the Lahiri ayanamsa, adopted by the Govt of India in 1955 and used here.
A janma kundli (janma = birth, kundli = chart) is computed from three inputs: date, time and geographic coordinates of birth. The 12 houses (bhavas) of the kundli govern specific areas of life - body, wealth, siblings, home, children, health, marriage, longevity, dharma, career, income and liberation. The nine grahas (planets) placed in these houses and rashis give the detailed reading.
Timing in Vedic astrology uses the Vimshottari Dasha system - a 120-year cycle of planetary periods that begins at the nakshatra of the natal Moon. This is the primary tool for predicting when life events are likely to manifest: marriage, career transitions, health challenges, spiritual awakening and more.
Frequently asked questions
What is a Janma Kundli?
A Janma Kundli (also called birth chart, natal chart or horoscope) is a map of the sky at the exact moment of your birth. Vedic astrology (Jyotisha) divides the sky into 12 rashis (zodiac signs) and places the nine grahas (Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu) in specific rashis and houses based on your date, time and place of birth. This map is used to understand personality, life events, strengths, challenges and timing through dasha periods.
What is Lagna (Ascendant)?
Lagna is the rashi that was rising on the eastern horizon at the exact minute of your birth. It forms the first house of the kundli and is considered the most important point in Vedic astrology - it determines your physical appearance, temperament and overall life outlook. Accurate birth time is essential for correct lagna calculation because the lagna changes every two hours.
What is Vimshottari Dasha?
Vimshottari Dasha is the most widely used planetary period system in Vedic astrology. It divides your life into major periods (Mahadashas) ruled by each of the nine planets, totalling 120 years. Each Mahadasha is further divided into sub-periods called Antardashas. The dasha sequence and starting point are determined by the nakshatra occupied by your Moon at birth. This system is used to predict the timing of life events - career changes, marriage, health, spiritual growth.
What is the difference between North Indian and South Indian kundli?
Both charts show the same astrological information - the 12 houses and 9 planets - but use different visual formats. The North Indian chart (diamond style) shows fixed house numbers and the rashi moves; the first house is always at the top-centre. The South Indian chart shows fixed rashis and the house numbers shift. South Indians typically use the South Indian format; North Indians use the diamond chart. Both are equally valid.
What is Navamsa (D9 chart)?
The Navamsa (ninth division chart, D9) is the most important divisional chart in Vedic astrology after the birth chart. It is used to evaluate the strength of planets, assess marriage and partnership prospects, and understand the deeper dharmic purpose of life. A planet that is debilitated in the birth chart but exalted in Navamsa gains strength (Neecha-Bhanga effect).
What is Sade Sati?
Sade Sati is a 7.5-year period during which Saturn (Shani) transits through the rashi before, through and after your Moon sign. It is traditionally considered a time of challenge, delay and transformation. However, for Moon signs compatible with Saturn - Capricorn, Aquarius and Libra (exaltation) - Sade Sati can bring discipline, hard-earned success and spiritual maturity rather than hardship.
Is the kundli calculation accurate?
Yes. SevaCart uses the Swiss Ephemeris (the same astronomical data used by professional astrology software) with Lahiri ayanamsa (the standard for Vedic astrology as set by the Govt of India). Calculations include sidereal planetary positions, Kuja dosha, Shadbala, Ashtakavarga and Vimshottari dasha with precise day-level accuracy. You can also switch to Krishnamurti Paddhati (KP) ayanamsa in the advanced settings.
Does the tool store my birth data?
No personal data is sent to any server during calculation. All planetary computations run on SevaCart's servers but only the input coordinates (latitude, longitude, timezone, date and time) are transmitted - no name or identity is stored. You can optionally save your kundli to your SevaCart account for future reference.
