Adhikara - Background

Naimisharanya - sages led by Shaunaka assemble at the dawn of Kali yuga. Suta arrives and is requested to narrate the supreme dharma. Background of Parikshit's curse: the snake-bite from Takshaka after the rishi-putra Sringi curses him for placing a dead snake on his father Samika.

Description of the Brahma-loka. Shuka cites his own father Vyasa's teaching of the 10 lakshanas (defining characteristics) of a Purana.

Vidura returns from pilgrimage. Maitreya teaches him. Creation through Brahma. Kapila - son of Kardama + Devahuti - teaches Sankhya and bhakti to his mother. Kapila Gita (chapter 25-33) is one of the great Bhagavata teachings.

Pracetas, Daksha-yajna, Sati's death, Shiva's tandava with her body, the dismemberment by Vishnu's chakra. Dhruva's tapasya at age 5 - the boy who became the polar star. Story of Prachinabarhi and the Pracetas. King Prithu - first crowned king of the earth - milks the earth-cow to produce wealth.

Sthiti - Cosmography

Priyavrata's descendants. Rishabha-deva (an avatara of Vishnu) and his son Bharata - from whom Bharatavarsha takes its name. The geography of the seven dvipas, seven samudras, the bhuvar-loka, the 21 hells. The story of Bharata's rebirth as a deer + then as Jada-bharata.

Poshana - Sustenance

sāṅketyaṃ pārihāsyaṃ vā stobhaṃ helanam eva vā | vaikuṇṭha-nāma-grahaṇam aśeṣāgha-haraṃ viduḥ ||

Whether out of indication, jest, mere filler, or even disregard - the very chanting of Vaikuntha's name is known to destroy every sin.

Oh, how fortunate! Oh, how fortunate are Nanda the cowherd and the residents of Vraja - whose friend is the supreme bliss, the full, eternal Brahman. - Brahma's prayer after stealing the calves.

यज्ञैः सङ्कीर्तनप्रायैर्यजन्ति हि सुमेधसः॥

kṛṣṇa-varṇaṃ tviṣākṛṣṇaṃ sāṅgopāṅgāstra-pārṣadam | yajñaiḥ saṅkīrtana-prāyair yajanti hi sumedhasaḥ ||

In the Kali age, the wise worship him who, though dark in essence, is golden in lustre - with his limbs, associates, weapons, and companions - chiefly through sankirtana (congregational chanting). - The verse cited as the prophecy of Sri Chaitanya.

Ashraya - Refuge

Kali yuga foretold - its degenerations + the avatara Kalki at its close. Markandeya's vision of cosmic dissolution. Parikshit dies on the seventh day from Takshaka's bite - he has heard the entire Bhagavata. Suta sums up the Bhagavata in 18,000 verses + the eight glorifications of the listener.
