Bhairava (भैरव) - the fierce form of Shiva, destroyer of fear, lord of time, and eternal guardian of Kashi. This page presents the complete Kalabhairava Ashtakam by Adi Shankaracharya, the Bhairava Chalisa, Bhairava Kavacham, Batuk Bhairava Stotram, the mool mantra, eight sacred Bhairava kshetras, and the Pancha Bhuta Bhairavi framework.
Tantric Sadhana DisclaimerTantric sadhanas require initiation from a qualified guru. The information here is for study and devotion. SevaCart does not endorse unsupervised tantric practice. Advanced Bhairava sadhanas - Ashtami Sadhana, Shmashana Sadhana, or full Batuka Bhairava Anushthana - should never be attempted without proper diksha from an initiated guru of an unbroken tantric lineage.
Who is Bhairava
Form - Bhairava (भैरव) is the fierce manifestation of Shiva, representing time (Kala), destruction of fear, and the guardian of the eight directions. The name Bhairava derives from Sanskrit - Bhai (fear) + rava (dispeller) - the one who destroys fear itself.
Origin - Bhairava emerged when Brahma, in a moment of arrogance, claimed to be the supreme creator. Shiva then manifested his fierce aspect Bhairava, who severed one of Brahma's five heads. The skull (kapala) remained attached to Bhairava's hand until it was washed off at Varanasi - which is why Kashi is Bhairava's eternal seat and Bhairava is the kotwal (city-guardian) of Kashi.
64 Forms - There are 64 Bhairavas (Chaunsath Bhairava) in the Shaiva-Tantra tradition. The eight principal Bhairavas (Ashta Bhairava) are: Asitanga Bhairava, Ruru Bhairava, Chanda Bhairava, Krodha Bhairava, Unmatta Bhairava, Kapali Bhairava, Bhishana Bhairava, and Samhara Bhairava. Among these, Kalabhairava (Kala = time, the ruler of time) is the foremost.
Vahana (vehicle) - Dog (shvana) - the vehicle of Bhairava. The dog represents absolute loyalty, the non-judgmental nature of divine consciousness, and the ability to move between worlds. Feeding a dog is considered an act of propitiation of Bhairava.
Worship - Bhairava is worshipped especially on Kalabhairava Ashtami (the eighth day of Krishna-paksha in Margashirsha month), every Ashtami (8th lunar day), and on Sundays. Kashi Vishwanath's completion is marked by Kala Bhairava's blessings - no pilgrimage to Kashi is complete without visiting Kal Bhairava temple.
Kalabhairava Ashtakam - 8 Verses
Composed by Adi Shankaracharya (c. 788–820 CE). Each of the eight verses ends with the refrain "Kaashikaapuraadhinaatha Kaalabhairavam Bhaje" - "I worship Kalabhairava, the Lord of the city of Kashi."
Meaning - I worship Kalabhairava, the Lord of Kashi, whose lotus feet are served by Indra and other gods, who wears a serpent as the sacred thread and the crescent moon on his forehead, who is compassionate, who is saluted by sages like Narada and other yogis, and who is clad in the directions (naked - digambara).
Meaning - I worship Kalabhairava, the Lord of Kashi, who blazes like a million suns, who is the boat to cross the ocean of worldly existence, who is the highest, who has a blue throat, who grants wished-for boons, who has three eyes, who is the death of death (Kala of Kala), whose eyes are like lotus petals, who holds a trident, and who is the imperishable one.

Meaning - I worship Kalabhairava, the Lord of Kashi, who grants both worldly enjoyment (bhukti) and liberation (mukti), who has a beautiful, auspicious form, who is affectionate to devotees, who exists as the form of all worlds, and whose waist is adorned with melodiously tinkling golden bells.
Meaning - I worship Kalabhairava, the Lord of Kashi, who is the guardian of the bridge of dharma, who destroys the path of adharma, who is the liberator from the bondage of karma, who grants auspicious comfort, who is omnipresent, and whose divine body is adorned with the brilliant golden noose of Shesha (the serpent).
Meaning - I worship Kalabhairava, the Lord of Kashi, whose beautiful pair of feet shine with the radiance of gem-studded sandals, who is eternal, without a second, the desired deity, spotless and pure, who destroys the pride of death (Yama), and who liberates with his fierce teeth.
Meaning - I worship Kalabhairava, the Lord of Kashi, whose loud laughter splits open the cosmic egg of Brahma, whose very gaze destroys all accumulated sins, who rules with terrible authority, who grants the eight great siddhis (supernatural attainments), and who wears a garland of skulls.
Meaning - I worship Kalabhairava, the Lord of Kashi, who is the lord of all spirit-beings, who grants wide-spreading fame, who purifies the merit and sin of those dwelling in Kashi, who is omnipresent, who is supremely knowledgeable in the path of righteousness, who is the ancient one, and who is the lord of the universe.

Bhairava Sadhana - Guidance + Disclaimer
Important Disclaimer
These are advanced tantric practices. Attempt only under the guidance of an initiated guru. SevaCart presents this information for educational purposes only. Improper practice of tantric sadhana without proper initiation can cause psychological, physical, and spiritual harm. Never attempt these practices independently.
Overview - Bhairava sadhana belongs to the Vama-marga (left-handed path) and Kaula traditions of Shaiva tantra. These are among the most powerful - and most demanding - sadhanas in the Hindu tantric system. They require: (1) Diksha (initiation) from a qualified guru of an unbroken tantric lineage; (2) Shaiva-diksha and specifically Bhairava-diksha; (3) a pure sattvic or vira temperament; (4) freedom from attachment to results; (5) complete surrender to the guru-parampara.
Foundational Bhairava Sadhana (for devotional practice only)
Shuddhi (purification): Bath before sadhana. Wear clean clothes - traditionally black or dark blue for Bhairava.
Asana: Sit on a black wool or black cotton asana, facing north or east.
Sankalpa: State your intention clearly - protection, removal of obstacles, or devotional worship.
Deepa: Light a sesame-oil lamp (Bhairava's preferred oil). Incense of dhoop, loban, or gugal.
Mool Mantra Japa: Recite the Mool Mantra - Om Hreem Batukaya Apadudharanaya Kuru Kuru Batukaya Hreem Om - 108 times.
Kalabhairava Ashtakam: Recite the 8 verses with meaning and understanding.
Nivedana: Offer black sesame seeds, black flowers (if available), or any seasonal flowers, with pure water.
Visarjana: Conclude with a simple prayer of gratitude and release.
Suitable for - This basic devotional practice is suitable for householders seeking protection, removal of fear, and the grace of Bhairava as the guardian of dharma.
Advanced practices - Advanced Bhairava sadhanas - including the Ashtami Sadhana, Shmashana Sadhana, and the full Batuka Bhairava Anushthana - require full tantric initiation (abhisheka) from a Shaiva guru. These practices involve specific yantras, specific mantras revealed only in initiation, and specific times (often midnight on Ashtami or Amavasya). DO NOT attempt these independently.
Best days for worship
Kalabhairava Ashtami (Margashirsha Krishna Ashtami) - the supreme Bhairava festival
