Pumsavana

Performed in the third month for the well-being of the foetus and the mother. Mantras, gentle massage, dietary care.

Simantonnayana
सीमन्तोन्नयनHair-parting · 7th month
Performed in the seventh month. The husband parts the wife's hair upward, symbolising care and protection during the final months of pregnancy.

Jatakarma
जातकर्मBirth ritual · at birth
Performed immediately after birth. Honey and ghee are placed on the newborn's tongue along with the recitation of Vedic mantras for intelligence and longevity.

Namakarana
नामकरणNaming · 11th–12th day
The naming ceremony. The baby's nakshatra is consulted; the first syllable of the name traditionally matches one of the four padas of the nakshatra.

Nishkramana
निष्क्रमणFirst outing · 4th month
The baby's first formal outing — usually to the temple or to see the sun and the moon for the first time. Protective mantras are recited.

Annaprashana
अन्नप्राशनFirst solid food · 6th–7th month
The first solid food (usually rice cooked with ghee and a little jaggery) is fed to the baby. Tradition includes placing several objects (book, tools, money) before the child to see which they reach for — a playful glimpse of the future.

Chudakarana
चूडाकरणFirst haircut · 1st or 3rd year
The first ritual haircut, often at the family deity's temple. The hair from past lives is symbolically removed; the child enters new growth.

Karnavedha
कर्णवेधEar-piercing · 1st or 3rd year
Ear piercing for both boys and girls. Traditionally believed to support sensory development and protect against certain illnesses.

Vidyarambha
विद्यारम्भBeginning of education · around 5 years
The child writes his or her first letter — usually "Om" or "Sri Ganeshaya namah" — guided by a parent or priest. Beginning of formal study.

Upanayana
उपनयनSacred-thread initiation · 8 years (Brahmin)
The single most important boyhood samskara. The boy receives the yajnopavita (sacred thread) and is whispered the Gayatri mantra by his guru. Formally enters the Brahmacharya ashrama.

Vedarambha
वेदारम्भBeginning of Vedic study · after upanayana
Formal start of Veda recitation. The student takes a vow of disciplined study and begins memorising the family's shakha.

Keshanta / Ritushuddhi
केशान्त / ऋतुशुद्धिFirst shave (boys) / first menstruation (girls) · 16 years
Marking the transition into adulthood. For boys, the ritual first shave; for girls, the celebration of the first menstruation as a moment of becoming a woman.

Samavartana
समावर्तनGraduation · end of studentship
The student returns home from the gurukul. The teacher gives the famous Taittiriya graduation address — "Speak truth, practice dharma, do not be careless about your study". The Brahmacharya ashrama ends.

Vivaha
विवाहMarriage · at householder readiness
Marriage. The most elaborate of all samskaras — saptapadi (seven steps), the four pheras around the fire, the giving of mangalsutra and kumkum. The Grihastha ashrama begins.

Antyeshti
अन्त्येष्टिFuneral rites · at death
The final samskara. The cremation, the gathering of the bones, the immersion in a sacred river, the shraddha rituals that follow at fixed intervals to support the soul's onward journey.
