Classical Indian Palmistry - Reference
Hasta (hand) + Samudrika (the science of bodily marks) - a branch of Samudrika Shastra concerned with reading the lines, mounts, and shape of the palm.
Hastasamudrika is one of the classical applied sciences of Sanatana Dharma. Unlike modern fortune-telling, it is an observational system - the palm is read as a map of one’s constitution, tendencies, and patterns of karma. Not as a prediction engine. The hand layout - left vs right
In Hindu tradition, both hands are read but for different purposes:
Right hand - present / kriyamana
The right hand carries kriyamana karma— the karma you are actively creating in this life through your choices. It is read as the more dynamic and changeable map.
Some lineages reverse this - read the dominant hand as present and the non-dominant as past. Both readings have classical support; the Bhrigu lineage uses left-as-inherited, the southern schools often use dominant-as-present.
The 6 major lines (Rekhas)
Six principal lines are read on the palm. Each governs a domain — vitality, emotion, intellect, destiny, recognition, health.
Life Line
Ayu RekhaGoverns: Vitality, family bonds, longevity, physical constitution
Begins between the thumb and index, curves around the thumb base (Shukra mount). Indicates lifespan quality, energy reserves, and major life transitions - NOT the literal years one will live.
Heart Line
Hriday RekhaGoverns: Emotions, romantic relationships, capacity for love, emotional health
Topmost horizontal line - runs from the percussion (Mercury side) across the palm toward the index/Jupiter mount. Reveals how one loves, not whom one loves.
Head Line
Mastak / Buddhi RekhaGoverns: Intellect, mental approach, decision style, communication style
Runs horizontally across the middle of the palm, beginning near the life line. Indicates how the mind processes - not how intelligent one is.
Fate Line
Bhagya RekhaGoverns: Destiny, career path, life purpose, public stature
Vertical line running up the palm toward Saturn mount (middle finger base). Many palms lack this line entirely - its absence does NOT mean a fateless life. It indicates a self-directed life rather than a karma-locked one.
Sun Line
Surya RekhaGoverns: Fame, recognition, creativity, success in chosen field
Vertical line rising toward the Sun mount (ring finger base). When present, indicates recognition for one's work. When absent, success is private rather than public.
Mercury Line
Budha Rekha / Swastha RekhaGoverns: Health, communication, business acumen, intuition
Vertical line rising from the wrist toward the Mercury (little finger) mount. Also called the Health Line - strongest reading is its ABSENCE (excellent health).

The 7 mounts (Parvats) - planetary correspondences
Seven raised areas on the palm correspond to the seven classical planets (Surya, Chandra, Mangal, Budha, Brihaspati, Shukra, Shani). A prominent mount = strong influence of that planet in your nature.

Prominent: Serious, disciplined, drawn to depth over breadth. Patient researcher. Risk: melancholy, isolation.
Flat: Lighter karmic load in this lifetime around discipline. Cultivate routine to avoid drift.
Mount of Sun

Location: Upper Mars below Mercury, Lower Mars below Jupiter, Mars Plain in palm centre
Governs: Courage, energy, action, self-defence, willpower
Prominent: Courageous, decisive, athletic, principled fighter. Excellent first-responder type. Risk: anger, combativeness.
Flat: Peaceful temperament; conflict-avoidant. Cultivate assertion practice (martial art, debate, Hanuman japa).
Thumb, fingers, and nails
Beyond lines and mounts, the shape and proportion of fingers and nails carry traditional meanings.
The thumb (Angushtha)
In Hastasamudrika, the thumb is considered the most important single feature — classical texts say one can read an entire personality from the thumb alone.
- Wide angle (≥90°) — open-minded, generous, willing to take risks. Adventurous.
- Medium angle (60–90°) — balanced; the classical “householder” thumb.
- Narrow angle (under 60°) — cautious, careful with energy and resources.
- Three sections — willpower (top), logic (middle), Shukra mount (base of love + vitality).
- Stiff thumb — conservative, principled. Flexible thumb — adaptable, often artistic.
Fingers (Anguli)
- Long fingers (longer than palm) — detail-oriented, analytical, fine arts.
- Short fingers (shorter than palm) — big-picture, decisive, leadership.
- Index longer than ring — born leader; Jupiter mount energy dominates.
- Ring longer than index — creative, artistic, performance-gifted; Surya mount dominates.
- Knotted joints — philosophical, thinker, slow but thorough.
- Smooth joints — intuitive, fast, impressionable.
Nails (Nakha)
- Square — practical, methodical, strong-willed.
- Round / oval — calm, balanced, peace-loving.
- Pointed / almond — imaginative, refined, sensitive nervous system.
- Spatulate (wider at top) — inventive, restless, original.
- White spots on nails — classically read as nervine-tissue depletion (consult a vaidya).

Hastasamudrika as a discipline draws on several classical texts:
- Samudrika Shastra — the parent science of reading bodily marks (face, hand, foot, gait, voice).
- Hasta Samudrika — the hand-specific branch; chapters appear in Garga, Varahamihira, and later compilations.
- Bhrigu Samhita — ascribed to sage Bhrigu, contains palm-line correspondences alongside its astrological body.
- Brihat Samhita (Varahamihira, 6th C CE) — chapter 68 covers bodily marks including hand-line interpretation.
- Hasta Sanjivani — a medieval compilation focused on palm-line variants.
- Modern cross-references include Cheiro’s 20th-century works which drew partly on Indian Hastasamudrika.
