What — Kal-Bhairava ("Time-Bhairava") is the supreme Bhairava — the Kashi Kotwal (the police-chief of Kashi). Every pilgrim to Kashi must FIRST visit Kal-Bhairava + get permission before entering the main Kashi Vishvanath temple. He keeps the keys to Kashi.
Origin — When Bhairava beheaded Brahma's 5th arrogant head, Brahma-skull stuck to his hand (brahma-hatya-dosha). Bhairava wandered the entire earth seeking moksha. Only at Kashi did the skull finally drop. Kashi-Vishvanath himself appointed Bhairava as the kotwal (chief-protector) of Kashi.
Temple — Kal-Bhairava temple, Visheshwarganj, Kashi (Varanasi). ~10 minutes walk from Vishvanath. Annual Bhairava-Ashtami (Margashirsha Krishna Ashtami) draws lakhs.
★ Significance — Bhairava represents TIME (kala). Worshipping him aligns the worshipper with cosmic time, removes untimely-events + accidents, grants long life. Tantric sadhakas worship him as Bhairava + his consort Bhairavi as the supreme Shiva-Shakti couple.
