Navadurgas - 9 forms across Navaratri

The 9 nights of Sharad Navaratri honour the 9 forms of Durga in sequence - from Shailaputri (the rooted earth-mother) to Siddhidatri (the bestower of siddhis). The 9 forms = the 9-stage spiritual journey.

The nine forms of Durga across Sharad Navaratri

Navaratri 9-day observance

What - The 9-night vrata. Each night = one Navadurga + her specific colour + bhog + mantra. Final night (Mahanavami) → Vijaya Dashami (Day 10 = celebration of victory).

Ritual - Day 1: ghata-sthapana (install a kalasha with akhanda-jyoti - continuous flame). Day 1-9: each evening recite Devi Kavacham + Argala + Kilaka, then 1-2 chapters of Saptashati + that night's Navadurga mantra. Day 10: Vijaya Dashami - burn the Ravana-effigy (in Rama-tradition) + immerse Devi-murti (in Bengal Durga-puja tradition).

★ Why important - The 9 forms = the 9-stage spiritual journey. Shailaputri (rootedness) → Brahmacharini (tapas) → Chandraghanta (courage) → Kushmanda (creation/abundance) → Skandamata (wisdom) → Katyayani (victory) → Kalaratri (destruction-of-darkness) → Mahagauri (purification) → Siddhidatri (siddhi attained). The supreme micro-curriculum of Devi-sadhana, taught in 9 nights.
