The most fundamental nitya-karma of a dvija (twice-born). Performed thrice — pratah (sunrise), madhyahnika (noon), sayam (sunset). 15 steps, anchored on Gayatri japa (28 minimum, 108 standard, up to 1008 maximum). Sanskrit text + English meaning + practical procedure for every step. Smarta / Apastamba-sutra tradition followed below.
Procedure — Sit facing east, in vajrasana or sukhasana. Take three small sips of water from the right palm (the brahma-tirtha, between thumb and index finger), reciting one name of Vishnu with each sip. Then touch the lips, both eyes, both ears, both nostrils, the head, and finally the heart with wet fingers.
Mantra
Salutations to the Imperishable. Salutations to the Endless. Salutations to Govinda.
Significance — Internal + external purification. The three names invoke Vishnu in his three aspects: stable (Achyuta), endless (Ananta), and protector of senses (Govinda).
Procedure — With right thumb close right nostril, exhale through left (rechaka). Close left nostril with ring + little fingers, inhale through right (puraka). Hold breath (kumbhaka) for the count of the entire Pranava-Vyahriti-Gayatri mantra (24 syllables × 3 = 72 mental counts). Release through left.
Mantra
Om — the earth-plane, atmosphere, heaven, mahar, jana, tapa, satya. Om — we meditate on the supreme effulgence of Savitri Deva; may he illumine our intellect. Om — water, light, essence, immortality, Brahman, all the worlds, Om.
Significance — The seven vyahritis name the seven lokas. The Gayatri at the centre is the Veda-mata. Combined with breath-restraint, the mantra is "burnt" into the prana itself, purifying every faculty.
Procedure — Right palm over left, both palms over the right thigh. Declare the full sankalpa naming desha (place), kala (time — year/ayana/ritu/masa/paksha/tithi/vara/nakshatra), and karma (the rite — pratah/madhyahnika/sayam sandhya). End with "karishye" (I shall perform).
Mantra
For the destruction of all my accumulated sins, and for the pleasure of Sri Parameshwara, I shall perform the morning sandhya.
Significance — Declaring intention in the presence of Surya makes the karma a yajna. Without sankalpa, the same physical actions are not ritual but routine.
Procedure — Take a darbha-grass blade or kusha, dip in water from the kamandalu. Sprinkle the water on the head 4 times reciting four Veda-mantras (Rig 10.9.1-3 — Apo hi shtha). Then sprinkle on feet.
Mantra
O Waters, you are sources of bliss. Grant us nourishment, vigour, and the vision of the great. (1) Whatever is your auspicious essence — share it with us here, as mothers share with their longing children. (2) For the satisfaction of him whose dwelling you nourish — to him do we incline; you, O Waters, are the source of our birth.
Significance — External purification by Apah (waters), the first element. The Apo-hi-shtha mantra is one of the oldest in the Rig Veda — water as the womb of all life.
Procedure — Take a small spoonful of water in the right palm (brahma-tirtha). Drink it while reciting the mantra. Cleansing of inner sins.
Mantra
May Surya, may Manyu, and the lords of Manyu, protect me from sins born of anger. Whatever sin I committed in the night — by mind, speech, hands, feet, stomach, or genitals — may the night wipe it away. Whatever evil is in me — that I offer into the immortal womb, into Surya the Light. Svaha!
Significance — Confessing and "burning" the previous night's sins by drinking the water charged with the mantra. Surya, the witness of all action, accepts the offering.
Procedure — Take water in cupped right palm; cover with left. Hold close to nose while reciting. At the end, throw the water down to the left — the sins are expelled with it.
Mantra
From tapas burning bright were born Rita (cosmic order) and Satya (truth). From them was born the Night. From the Night, the Ocean. (Rig 10.190.1)
Significance — Aghamarshana literally = "destruction of sin". The cosmogonic mantra contemplates the order of creation. Sin = disorder; remembering primordial order undoes it.
№7Arghya Pradana · अर्घ्य प्रदान
Procedure — Stand facing east at sunrise (or west at sunset). Cup both hands with water and lift to forehead height. Pour the water out — slowly, in a stream — towards Surya, while reciting Gayatri. Repeat 3 times. (Some traditions add a 4th "prayaschitta arghya" if late.)
Mantra
Om — across all worlds. We meditate upon the supreme radiance of Savitri Deva, who may illumine our intellect. (The Gayatri Mantra)
Significance — Arghya = welcome-offering. The water poured towards Surya is symbolically pushed back from Rahu (the eclipse-demon) — protecting Surya so he in turn protects us. Without arghya the rest of sandhya is incomplete.
Procedure — Turn fully clockwise around oneself one time while reciting. Symbolic circumambulation of Surya as the centre.
Mantra
That Aditya is Brahman.
Significance — Identifying the gross Sun with the supreme Brahman. The single most powerful upasana statement: cosmic deity = ultimate reality.
№9Gayatri Avahana · गायत्री आवाहन
Procedure — Sit again. Invite Gayatri-devi to take her seat in the heart. Touch head, mouth, heart in sequence as the three Brahmas are invoked.
Mantra
May the boon-giving Devi come — the imperishable Brahman-form, Gayatri the mother of all chandas (metres). Accept this Brahman from me.
Significance — Gayatri is not just a mantra but a devi. Avahana invites her presence. The mantra is then "alive" not just sound.
№10Gayatri Japa ·
Procedure — Hold akshamala (108-bead rudraksha or tulasi mala) in right hand, covered with right uttariya cloth. Recite Gayatri silently 108 times (mandatory minimum is 28; full is 108; pratah-madhyahnika may extend to 1008).
Mantra
Om — across all worlds. We meditate upon the supreme radiance of Savitri Deva, who may illumine our intellect.
Significance — The heart of sandhya. Each repetition burns a karma-seed. 108 × 365 = ~40,000 Gayatri repetitions per year minimum for a brahmachari sandhya.
№11Surya Upasthana · सूर्य उपस्थान
Procedure — Stand facing east (or west at sunset) with both palms raised, recite the three Surya upasthana mantras.
Mantra
(1) Of Mitra, sustainer of the wakeful, the divine fame is to be won — truthful, of dazzling repute. (2) Beholding from beyond darkness the higher light, we have reached Surya — the divine god, the supreme light. (3) Banners carry up Surya, the all-knowing god — that the whole world may see.
Significance — Direct address to Surya in the sky. Mitra (friend), Savitri (impeller), Surya (light) — three names, one deity. Upasthana is "rising up" of the worshipper to meet the deity face to face.
№12Dik-devata Vandana ·
Procedure — Turn slightly and bow to each of the eight directional deities in sequence — east first, clockwise around.
Mantra
East — to Indra. South — to Yama. West — to Varuna. North — to Kubera. Above — to Brahma. Below — to Ananta. Salutations to Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva.
Significance — Recognising the lokapalas (directional guardians). Without them no boundary is safe. The directions are not abstract — each carries a presiding deity who must be acknowledged.
№13Yama Tarpana ·
Procedure — Offer water to Yama (offered after sunset sandhya for the protection from untimely death). Cup right palm with water, recite name, pour water out facing south.
Mantra
To Yama, to Dharmaraja, to Death and the Ender, to the son of Vivasvan, to Time, to the destroyer of all beings.
Significance — Pratah sandhya = remember the gods. Sayam sandhya = also remember Yama. Acknowledging mortality each evening returns one to dharma.
Procedure — Sit cross-legged. Declare your full lineage — pravara (ancestral rishis), gotra, sutra (Apastamba/Bodhayana/Ashvalayana), Veda-shakha, and given name. Salutation gesture (hands flat, then folded) to elders + the four directions.
Mantra
May good come to cows and brahmanas across the four oceans. I, [pravara-name-1] [name-2] [name-3] — bearer of the three-rishi pravara, of [gotra] gotra, [sutra] sutra, [shakha] shakha, named [Your-name]-sharma — make my salutation.
Significance — Sandhya ends with self-introduction. Identity in the Vedic worldview is not "I am [first-name] [last-name]" but the full chain of rishis through whom the Veda flowed to you. The pravara + gotra + sutra + shakha names every dimension.
Procedure — Final achamana (3 sips again). Mentally dissolve Gayatri-devi back into the heart. Stand and prostrate fully.
Mantra
O Devi, on the highest peak, on the head of the earth-mountain — with the permission of the brahmanas, go now, O Devi, as you please. (Gayatri visarjana)
Significance — Closing. Sandhya is not "left" — Gayatri is requested to depart. Without visarjana the deity's presence is held captive, which is inauspicious.
