The Tirukkuṟaḷ is a classic of Tamil literature — 1,330 rhyming couplets (kuṟaḷ) of just seven words each, composed by the poet-sage Thiruvalluvar. It distils a complete ethic of life into the shortest possible verse form, and is revered across religions and languages as a universal guide to right living.
The author — Thiruvalluvar (Valluvar), dated variously between the 3rd century BCE and 5th century CE. So beloved is the work that the Tamil calendar (Thiruvalluvar Aandu) is reckoned from him, and a 133-foot statue of him stands at Kanyakumari — one foot for each chapter.
Structure — 1,330 couplets in 133 chapters (adhikāram) of exactly 10 kuṟaḷ each, grouped into three books (pāl) that mirror the puruṣārthas: Aṟam (virtue/dharma), Poruḷ (wealth & polity/artha) and Inbam (love/kāma).
Why "universal scripture" — It is called the Ulaga Podhu Marai — "the universal scripture for all" — because it teaches ethics without sectarian boundary: a Jain, Buddhist, Shaiva, Vaishnava or person of any faith can live by it. It has been translated into 40+ languages.
