Kendras + Trikonas + Upachayas + Dussthana
Kendras - Houses 1, 4, 7, 10 = Kendras (angles). Grahas here have full strength. Kendra-aphilipan + kendra-suffix grahas dominate the chart.
Trikonas - Houses 1, 5, 9 = Trikonas (trines). Houses of dharma. Grahas here grant supreme good. Jupiter in 5th or 9th = ideal.
Upachayas - Houses 3, 6, 10, 11 = Upachayas (improvement houses). Grahas here improve over time. Malefics (Mars, Saturn, Rahu) often GAIN strength here.
Dussthana - Houses 6, 8, 12 = Dussthanas (difficult houses). Grahas here generally weaken. EXCEPT - Saturn in 6 + Mars in 6 + ascendant-lord in 12 (for moksha) - these have special exceptions.
The 9-step reading method
STEP 1
Identify lagna (ascendant)
The rashi rising on the eastern horizon at the exact moment + place of birth. The lagna determines house positions for all other grahas. WITHOUT lagna, no chart-reading is possible.
STEP 2
Note lagna-adhipati (ascendant lord)
The lord-graha of the lagna-rashi. THIS is the primary indicator of the native's personality. Where is the lagna-lord placed? Strong (in own/exalted/trine) → strong personality. Weak (in debilitation/enemy-sign/dussthana) → weak personality.
STEP 3
Read Chandra-lagna (moon-sign)
The rashi the moon occupies. Read all 12 houses ALSO from chandra-lagna. The mind + emotions + mother-relationship are clearer from chandra-lagna than from lagna.
STEP 4
Identify exalted + debilitated grahas
Exalted grahas grant maximum results. Debilitated grahas struggle. Check the 9 grahas against the exaltation/debilitation list (Sun↑Aries / ↓Libra; Moon↑Taurus / ↓Scorpio; Mars↑Capricorn / ↓Cancer; Mercury↑Virgo own + exalt / ↓Pisces; Jupiter↑Cancer / ↓Capricorn; Venus↑Pisces / ↓Virgo; Saturn↑Libra / ↓Aries; Rahu↑Taurus(disputed)+Gemini / ↓Scorpio+Sagittarius; Ketu↑Scorpio / ↓Taurus).
STEP 5
Check the Dasha (current period)
Per the Vimshottari Dasha. Where does the current Mahadasha-lord sit in the chart? In which house is its Antardasha-lord? Combined = the "active current focus" of life.
STEP 6
Look for Yogas (auspicious combinations)
Hundreds of named Yogas in classical astrology. Common: Gaja-Kesari Yoga (Jupiter + Moon in kendra to each other - supreme intelligence + fame). Raja Yoga (kendra-lord + trikona-lord conjunct - supreme success). Dhana Yoga (2nd + 11th lords combine - wealth). Neecha-Bhanga Raja Yoga (debilitated planet whose debilitation is "cancelled" → supreme rise from low origins).
STEP 7
Look for Doshas (afflictions)
Manglik Dosha (Mars in 1, 2, 4, 7, 8, 12). Kala Sarpa Yoga (all 7 grahas between Rahu + Ketu). Sade-Sati (Saturn transiting 12-1-2 from natal moon). Pitri-Dosha (Sun-Rahu/Ketu conjunction). Each has identified remedies.
STEP 8
Time predictions through Vimshottari
The 120-year dasha-sequence (each graha gets a fixed number of years). Within each Mahadasha (e.g. Saturn 19 years), there are antardashas of each graha proportionally. Within each antardasha, pratyantar-dasha, sukshma-dasha, prana-dasha. The most-zoomed-in level can predict specific 2-3-day windows.
STEP 9
Confirm with Gochara (transits)
Transit-predictions are made by tracking where the current grahas are vs the natal positions. Saturn-transit + Jupiter-transit are the most-watched (slow-moving + big effect).
⚠ Reading cautions
- Astrology shows TENDENCIES, not destiny. Free will + karma can modify predictions.
- A chart in isolation is incomplete. Multiple divisional charts (D-9 Navamsha for marriage, D-10 Dashamsha for career, etc) refine the picture.
- Birth time accuracy matters. An error of 4 minutes can shift the lagna by a degree, possibly changing the rising-sign entirely.
- Modern licensed Jyotishis are rare. Many "astrologers" online are simple predictors without classical training. Use Sri-Vidya-tradition or Madhva-tradition Jyotishis where possible.
- NEVER make major life-decisions (marriage, career) on astrology alone. Use it as one input among many.
