16.1Krishna
śrī-bhagavān uvāca | abhayaṃ sattva-saṃśuddhir-jñāna-yoga-vyavasthitiḥ | dānaṃ damaś-ca yajñaś-ca svādhyāyas-tapa ārjavam ||
The Blessed Lord said: Fearlessness, purity of heart, steadiness in the yoga of knowledge, charity, self-restraint, sacrifice, study of scripture, austerity, uprightness—
16.2Krishna
ahiṃsā satyam-akrodhas-tyāgaḥ śāntir-apaiśunam | dayā bhūteṣv-aloluptvaṃ mārdavaṃ hrīr-acāpalam ||
— non-violence, truth, freedom from anger, renunciation, peace, freedom from slander, compassion for beings, non-greediness, gentleness, modesty, steadiness—
16.3Krishna
tejaḥ kṣamā dhṛtiḥ śaucam-adroho nāti-mānitā | bhavanti sampadaṃ daivīm-abhijātasya bhārata ||
— vigour, forgiveness, fortitude, purity, absence of malice, absence of pride — these belong to one born to the divine endowment, O Bharata.
16.4Krishna
dambho darpo’bhimānaś-ca krodhaḥ pāruṣyam-eva ca | ajñānaṃ cābhijātasya pārtha sampadam-āsurīm ||
Hypocrisy, arrogance, conceit, anger, harshness, and ignorance — these belong, O Partha, to one born to the demonic endowment.
16.5Krishna
daivī sampad-vimokṣāya nibandhāyāsurī matā | mā śucaḥ sampadaṃ daivīm-abhijāto’si pāṇḍava ||
The divine endowment leads to liberation; the demonic to bondage. Do not grieve, O Pandava — you are born to the divine endowment.
16.6Krishna
dvau bhūta-sargau loke’smin daiva āsura eva ca | daivo vistaraśaḥ prokta āsuraṃ pārtha me śṛṇu ||
There are two kinds of beings created in this world — the divine and the demonic. The divine has been described in detail. Hear now of the demonic, O Partha.
16.7Krishna
pravṛttiṃ ca nivṛttiṃ ca janā na vidur-āsurāḥ | na śaucaṃ nāpi cācāro na satyaṃ teṣu vidyate ||
The demonic do not know what to do and what not to do. Neither purity, nor right conduct, nor truth is found in them.
16.8Krishna
asatyam-apratiṣṭhaṃ te jagad-āhur-anīśvaram | aparaspara-sambhūtaṃ kim-anyat kāma-haitukam ||
They say the world is unreal, without foundation, without God; produced by union without purpose, caused only by lust — nothing more.
16.9Krishna
etāṃ dṛṣṭim-avaṣṭabhya naṣṭātmāno’lpa-buddhayaḥ | prabhavanty-ugra-karmāṇaḥ kṣayāya jagato’hitāḥ ||
Holding this view, lost souls of small understanding, of cruel deeds, arise as enemies of the world for its destruction.
16.10Krishna
kāmam-āśritya duṣpūraṃ dambha-māna-madānvitāḥ | mohād-gṛhītvāsad-grāhān pravartante’śuci-vratāḥ ||
Holding insatiable desires, full of hypocrisy, pride, and arrogance — through delusion they grasp false notions and act with impure vows.
16.11Krishna
cintām-aparimeyāṃ ca pralayāntām-upāśritāḥ | kāmopabhoga-paramā etāvad-iti niścitāḥ ||
Beset by countless anxieties ending only in death, their highest aim is to enjoy desires — they are convinced this is all.
16.12Krishna
āśā-pāśa-śatair-baddhāḥ kāma-krodha-parāyaṇāḥ | īhante kāma-bhogārtham-anyāyenārtha-sañcayān ||
Bound by hundreds of cords of expectation, given over to lust and anger — they strive by unjust means to amass wealth for sensual enjoyment.
16.13Krishna
idam-adya mayā labdham-imaṃ prāpsye manoratham | idam-astīdam-api me bhaviṣyati punar-dhanam ||
"This today I have gained; this desire I shall fulfil. This is mine, and this wealth too shall be mine later."
16.14Krishna
asau mayā hataḥ śatrur-haniṣye cāparān-api | īśvaro’ham-ahaṃ bhogī siddho’haṃ balavān sukhī ||
"That enemy is slain by me; others too I shall slay. I am the lord; I am the enjoyer; I am perfect, powerful, happy."
16.15Krishna
āḍhyo’bhijanavān-asmi ko’nyo’sti sadṛśo mayā | yakṣye dāsyāmi modiṣya ity-ajñāna-vimohitāḥ ||
"I am rich, born of noble family. Who else is like me? I shall sacrifice, I shall give, I shall rejoice." — thus deluded by ignorance.
16.16Krishna
aneka-citta-vibhrāntā moha-jāla-samāvṛtāḥ | prasaktāḥ kāma-bhogeṣu patanti narake’śucau ||
Distracted by many thoughts, enveloped in the net of delusion, addicted to sensual enjoyment — they fall into a foul hell.
16.17Krishna
ātma-sambhāvitāḥ stabdhā dhana-māna-madānvitāḥ | yajante nāma-yajñais-te dambhenāvidhi-pūrvakam ||
Self-conceited, stubborn, filled with pride and intoxication of wealth — they offer sacrifices only in name, hypocritically and against the rules.
16.18Krishna
ahaṅkāraṃ balaṃ darpaṃ kāmaṃ krodhaṃ ca saṃśritāḥ | mām-ātma-para-deheṣu pradviṣanto’bhyasūyakāḥ ||
Clinging to ego, force, arrogance, lust, and anger — these envious ones hate me in their own and others' bodies.
16.19Krishna
tān-ahaṃ dviṣataḥ krūrān saṃsāreṣu narādhamān | kṣipāmy-ajasram-aśubhān-āsurīṣv-eva yoniṣu ||
These hateful, cruel, lowest of men, evil-doers in samsara — I hurl them again and again into demonic wombs.
16.20Krishna
āsurīṃ yonim-āpannā mūḍhā janmani janmani | mām-aprāpyaiva kaunteya tato yānty-adhamāṃ gatim ||
Entering demonic wombs birth after birth, the deluded, not attaining me, O son of Kunti, thence go to the lowest condition.
16.21Krishna
tri-vidhaṃ narakasyedaṃ dvāraṃ nāśanam-ātmanaḥ | kāmaḥ krodhas-tathā lobhas-tasmād-etat-trayaṃ tyajet ||
Triple is this gate of hell, destructive of the self — lust, anger, and greed. Therefore one should abandon these three.
16.22Krishna
etair-vimuktaḥ kaunteya tamo-dvārais-tribhir-naraḥ | ācaraty-ātmanaḥ śreyas-tato yāti parāṃ gatim ||
Freed from these three gates of darkness, O son of Kunti, one practises what is good for oneself, and then attains the supreme goal.
16.23Krishna
yaḥ śāstra-vidhim-utsṛjya vartate kāma-kārataḥ | na sa siddhim-avāpnoti na sukhaṃ na parāṃ gatim ||
One who, casting aside the injunctions of scripture, acts under the impulse of desire — attains neither perfection nor happiness nor the supreme goal.
16.24Krishna
tasmāc-chāstraṃ pramāṇaṃ te kāryākārya-vyavasthitau | jñātvā śāstra-vidhānoktaṃ karma kartum-ihārhasi ||
Therefore let the scripture be your authority in determining what is to be done and what is not to be done. Knowing the rules of scripture, you should act here in this world.
