Hanuman carrying the Sanjeevani mountain - symbol of devotion and strength

About the Chalisa

History - Composed by Tulsidas in Banaras around 1574 CE. Tradition: while Tulsidas was imprisoned by the Mughals, he recited the Chalisa 40 times. Hanuman manifested in the form of a thousand monkeys + tore down the prison. The Chalisa was thereafter recognised as a supremely powerful protective recitation.

When recited - Daily (morning + evening) by countless Hindus. Mandatory on Tuesday + Saturday (Hanuman's days). Hanuman Jayanti (Chaitra Purnima in North, Vaishakha Krishna Dashami in South). At any moment of fear, distress, illness. Before a difficult task / interview / exam.

Recitation - 40 chaupais take ~6-7 minutes at normal pace. Powerful effect from: 7x repetition (45 min) - common minimum. 11x or 21x repetition = anushthana. 100x = chalisa-puracharana (per chaupai 38, releases from bondage).

Why effective - The Chalisa is in Awadhi-Bhasha, not Sanskrit - accessible to ALL. Tulsidas's genius was to give the unliterate everything the literate already had. Its musical metre (Chaupai = 4 lines, ~16 syllables each) makes it instantly memorisable.
