Sadhana Programs - 40, 41, 108, 1008-day anushthanas

Classical Hindu sadhana is rarely "do whatever inspires you" - it is precise multi-day protocols with strict niyamas. 6 of the most-practised below + 10 universal anushthana rules.

Hanuman Chalisa 40-day path · ४० दिवस हनुमान् चालीसा साधना

40 daysDeity: Hanuman

Best start - Tuesday or Saturday. Especially: Hanuman Jayanti, Chaitra Navami, Vaishakha-month, Karthika-month.

Daily practice - 7 readings of Hanuman Chalisa per day (~45 min total). One in morning, one each at noon + sunset, four at night (or whatever distribution fits). The tradition asks for 40 unbroken days. Pause whenever your health, or a doctor, asks you to - the count can be restarted.

Niyamas

  • Vegetarian only (no onion/garlic/meat).
  • No alcohol / drugs.
  • Brahmacharya (sexual restraint).
  • Tuesday + Saturday - visit a Hanuman temple.
  • No haircut + no shave (men).
  • Wear red or saffron on Tuesday + Saturday.
  • Feed a monkey, a cow, or a poor person on day 40.

Phala - What the tradition holds: the Chalisa's own closing verses (Tulsidas) speak of fear leaving and of courage holding under trial, and families take it up in that spirit - through a difficult passage, or where a marriage is delayed. It is a devotional practice, not a treatment for any illness.

Who can do - Anyone. No diksha required. Even children can do (light version - 3 readings/day).

Lakshmi Mantra 41-day mandala · ४१ दिवस श्री लक्ष्मी मन्त्र

41 days (one mandala)Deity: Mahalakshmi

Best start - Friday. Especially Dhanteras-eve, Diwali-eve, Akshaya Tritiya, Varalakshmi Vrata day.

Daily practice - 108 repetitions of "ॐ श्रीं महालक्ष्म्यै नमः" with a tulasi-mala or sphatika-mala. Sit facing east at dawn or sunset. Light a ghee diya. Place a Sri Yantra OR a kumkum-marked coin in front.

Niyamas

  • White or yellow clothes Friday.
  • No salt on Friday (some traditions).
  • No anger / lying / harsh-speech throughout.
  • Donate something (food / clothes / money) each Friday.
  • Day 41 - large dana + brahmana / family meal.

Phala - Sustained wealth-flow. Removal of alakshmi (poverty-goddess). Marriage of unmarried daughter. Business expansion.

Who can do - Householders. No diksha required.

Maha-Mrityunjaya 108-day path · महामृत्युञ्जय जप १०८ दिवस

108 daysDeity: Mrityunjaya Shiva

Best start - Monday. Pradosha-day. Maha-Shivaratri. Shravana month.

Daily practice - 108 repetitions of "ॐ त्र्यम्बकं यजामहे..." with a rudraksha-mala. Daily abhisheka of Shiva-linga with milk + bilva-patra offering. Recite Sri Rudram once weekly (Monday).

Niyamas

  • Strict vegetarian throughout.
  • No mushrooms / fermented food.
  • No alcohol - even socially.
  • Brahmacharya.
  • No haircut / shave (men).
  • Bilva-tree pradakshina (3 rounds) every Monday.
  • Day 108 - 1008 ahuti homa or sponsor a Maha-Mrityunjaya at a Shiva temple.

Phala - What the tradition holds: the Tryambakam verse (Rigveda 7.59.12) asks in its own words for release from death "as a cucumber is freed from its stalk", and families take it up as a prayer for long life and protection. It is a devotional practice. It treats nothing, and it replaces no medical care.

Who can do - Anyone. No diksha required. Families often keep the japa alongside, not instead of, whatever care a doctor has advised.

10 universal anushthana rules

  1. Pick the right start-day per the sadhana's tradition. Do not start randomly.
  2. Once started, COMPLETE without break. A single missed day → return to day 1.
  3. Same time + same place every day. The body + mind learn to enter sadhana-mode automatically.
  4. No travel during long anushthanas if possible. If travel is unavoidable, carry mala + niyamas with you.
  5. No public announcement of the anushthana. Done silently. Tell only spouse + guru if needed.
  6. No expectation of specific results during the anushthana. Surrender the phala-akamksha. The phala arrives - but on the deity's timing.
  7. After completion: 1 day pause + sankalpa-purna (the formal closing ritual). Then resume normal life.
  8. Anushthana-burnout is real. After a long anushthana (108+ days), take 21 days of complete rest before next.
  9. Choose ONE deity, ONE mantra. Do not switch mid-anushthana to another deity / mantra.
  10. If guru-diksha given: that mantra. If no diksha: choose one of the universally-accessible mantras (Om Namah Shivaya, Om Namo Narayanaya, Hanuman Chalisa, etc).
